Womxn on the Moon is a queer, Black, and Latina owned business operated by Shannen Garza Hakim in Houston, TX. In addition to creating unique earring designs, this small business also focuses creating belonging through intersectional storytelling, maintaining inclusive branding made for all humans, and community engagement through fundraising for various non-profit organizations.
From non-profit leader to business owner, diversity and inclusion remains the heart and soul of this jewelry designer.
Hi, I’m Shannen Garza Hakim—a jewelry designer creating slow-made earrings crafted with natural stones, beadwork, and resin art. I live and create in Houston, but my journey in Spacy City began long before Womxn on the Moon.
For nearly 15 years, I worked in nonprofit organizations focused on college and career access for students of color. That work shaped my belief that creativity and community impact must go hand in hand. When I launched my business, I knew it needed to do more than offer beautiful pieces—it needed to hold space for equity, storytelling, and belonging.
The name Womxn on the Moon is a reimagining of the phrase “man on the moon.” Although no woman has yet set foot on the moon, the name highlights something bigger: the countless places where underrepresented communities still haven’t been given access, opportunity, or the chance to be “the first.” My brand exists to shine light on those absences—and to help fill them with presence, voice, and artistry.
I use the spelling womxn to honor the intersections of identity that have historically been excluded from mainstream feminism. This spelling refers only to me—not to my customers or community. My intention is always to create a space where everyone can see themselves reflected with dignity.
Creativity has been a constant in my life. I studied cross-cultural studies, photography, media, and writing in college—experiences that shaped how I see the world. This blend of art, storytelling, and cultural connection continues to guide everything I make.
Womxn on the Moon is the place where all those threads come together. Through this platform, I aim to uplift diverse narratives, support underrepresented artisans, and close equity gaps by contributing to nonprofits that champion women, LGBTQ+ communities, and people of color.
Every WOTM piece is slow-made, intentional, and packaged with care. Thank you for supporting my small business—and the magical vision behind it.
